No matter what type of filler is used, or for what purpose it is used, the procedure is basically the same. The patient indicates which areas require fillers. Once the filler is chosen, an allergy test may be performed (this applies only to Artecoll® and some of the collagens), and small amounts are injected into the site with a very thin needle. The results are precise and effective, and they may help you unlock your beauty.
Filling you in on the differences
There are several collagen-based fillers on the market, including
Inamed's CosmoDerm™ and CosmoPlast™. These tend to be the shortest-term
fillers. They are made up of collagen, which is found naturally in
the body, and they contain an anaesthetic. Results last from 2 to
4 months.
The hyaluronans are made synthetically of hyaluronic acid. These include
Medicis' Restylane® and Perlane®. These fillers tend to last longer
than the collagens, and since the fillers are natural sugars rather
than proteins, there is no need for an allergy tests. These products
vary in density from lowest (Restylane® Fine Lines) to medium (Restylane®)
to highest density (Perlane®). Denser fillers are better for filling
deeper wrinkles, and the fine line solutions suit less noticeable
lines. Results last from 3 to 12 months. Dr Schachter is one of teh first to use Restylane in Toronto.
The tear troughs are hollows that some people have below their lower
eyelids which accentuate the appearance of dark circles under the
eyes. In some people, the injection of a small amount of Restylane®
or Restylane® Fine Lines can lessen the blue or purple hollowness
in this area. One of our doctors can assess whether this procedure
would be helpful for you. Remember: don't take Aspirin, Advil, Motrin
or other blood thinners for at least a week prior to these injections,
as this is thin, delicate skin, where a small bruise is more visible.
Artecoll® is the most permanent or long lasting filler.
It is made up of tiny beads of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) suspended
in a collagen solution. PMMA can also be used to make plexiglas. Medical
professionals have used PMMA safely for over 60 years and it does
not cause allergic reactions; however, because of the collagen in
the product, a skin test is required. After the implant is injected,
the body absorbs the collagen base, and the beads of PMMA provide
a lattice on which the body can deposit its own natural collagen over
the following 3 or 4 months. Results from Artecoll® implants are much
longer lasting than the alternatives.
